Science!!!!

Aim:
Try to blow out a naked flame with carbon dioxide

Equipment:

  • Tea candle
  • a damp paper towel
  • lighter
  • 100ml beaker
  • Calcium carbonate (marble chips-SML)-(CaCO3)
  • Hydrochloric Acid
  • mixing spatula
  • splinter
  • ice-cream bowl
  • safety glasses
Method:
Step 1
place a damp paper towel into an ice-cream bowl.

step 2
light your tea candle up and place it on the paper towel

Step 3
after putting your safety glasses on use your mixing spatula and scoop up three scoops of Calcium carbonate (marble chips-SML)-(CaCO3) and pour in Hydrochloric acid into your 100ml beaker but only enough until it fizzes.

Step 4
Light your splinter up and slowly apply it into the beaker and the flame should blow put if it doesn't you are doing it wrong and try it again.

Step 5
Have Fun!!!

Results:
For my group, all of our attempts worked well.

Explanation:
we were using a candle to test if we had carbon dioxide but if it didn't blow
out we would know there is no carbon is the beaker
